A bettor earned a substantial sum on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro just before it was publicly declared, sparking debate about potential gains made from inside knowledge of American actions.

Market Movement in Predictions

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the month's conclusion increased in the hours before Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that the president had been apprehended.

A particular user, which registered on the site in December and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $nearly half a million from a modest bet of over $32,000.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Probability Spikes Before News Break

Platform data shows that users estimated the likelihood of the president's removal at just under 7% in the midday period of the prior Friday.

But the market's assessment had jumped to 11% by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the early hours of Saturday, indicating a sudden change in betting activity just before the public announcement was made.

"That trade has all the signs of a bet based on non-public details," stated an industry expert.

A small number of other traders also made tens of thousands of dollars from bets on the same outcome.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

Elected officials are starting to take note.

Proposed legislation presented on the start of the week would prevent federal workers from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a bet.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Event-driven betting sites have grown significantly in recent years, with participants able to bet on everything from elections to politics.

The industry were examined under the last presidential term. However it has received a warmer welcome during the present political climate.

Trading on insider information is a crime in the stock market, but there are less oversight in the forecasting arena.

A spokesperson for a competing service said their site "strictly forbids trading on insider information of any form."
